A teenager was killed by a train in O’Fallon, Illinois Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened along the tracks at East 4th and Lincoln.

People at the scene say the teen may have been attempting to race the train by skateboarding across the tracks.

The 13 year old, identified by police as Jonathan Sory of Lebanon, Illinois, was pronounced dead on the scene. He died from head and chest injuries.

A spokesperson from CSX Transportation says the company regrets the accident happened and released the following statement:

"It's tragic. Our conductors and engineers do everything to avoid these types of incidents, but often feel powerless because it takes them a mile to a mile and a half to come to a complete stop."
