Doesn't really matter to me anymore, either way we're fucked

So Chris mentioned to me last night that he'd heard rumors of McCain asking Huckabee to be his running mate. The rationale being that Huckabee would get the Southerners (read: White Conservative Christian wingnuts) to vote for the McCain ticket. This, predictably, caused me to feel nauseous. I already think we're heading down the highway to a theocracy in this country and I don't need Huckabee to be in the Number Two seat - especially considering McCain's age.

On the other side of the equation, we've got Obama who - best case scenario - will lead us into increased taxes, further into socialism/nannyism, and get kicked out of office after four years.

Anyway, I went looking for some info on the McCain VP situation today. I came across this article which reports that Huckabee is actually quietly supporting Obama. Why? Not because he believes in him or his positions - just the opposite.

Some U.S. Christians are not reconciled to McCain's candidacy but instead regard the prospective presidency of Barack Obama in the nature of a biblical plague visited upon a sinful people. These militants look at former Baptist preacher Huckabee as "God's candidate" for president in 2012. Whether they can be written off as merely a troublesome fringe group depends on Huckabee's course.

Nevertheless, the word is that some evangelicals dispute Huckabee's support. One experienced, credible activist in Christian politics who would not let his name be used told me that Huckabee, in personal conversation with him, had embraced the concept that an Obama presidency might be what the American people deserve. That fits what has largely been a fringe position among evangelicals: that the pain of an Obama presidency is in keeping with the Bible's prophecy.

Sounds crazy - so I'm going with the idea that it has some truth to it. Because where there are Christians, there is crazy as far as I'm concerned.
